1983
Rare Earth Coatings was founded in 1983 by Larry and Kathy Olson. Larry had years of experience in the vacuum coatings industry and a vision for a different kind of company. Together, they had the drive to overcome long odds and bring the vision to life.
Before he was an engineer, Larry worked at a grocery store, and saved up to buy a telescope. One night, he was out in the store’s parking lot stargazing when a man who owned an optical coating company saw what he was up to. After discovering Larry’s passion and work ethic, the man told him he was destined for more, hired him, and trained him up on vacuum coating systems.
Larry worked in the industry for twenty years. At each company he worked for, he started as an engineer and was promptly promoted to engineering manager. Finally, he decided that if he was going to be manager and run everything, it was time for him to start his own company with his wife Kathy—Rare Earth Coatings.
His training on the application of optical coating evolved naturally into EMI/RFI shielding. Immediately, he found success in working with aerospace and defense contractors.
Now specializing in functional and protective coatings, and EMI/RFI mitigation, Rare Earth Coatings primarily applies vacuum metallization, specialized plating, conductive paint, and other functional coatings.
As we’ve grown, we’ve insisted on remaining a family business: in 2003 Larry passed the baton to his kids, Jason and Kristina, who have stepped into leadership. By staying family owned, Rare Earth Coatings can offer the kind of attention and speed larger organizations cannot.
With the right functional coatings, your high-performance products will achieve peak performance.
